Outdoor Get-Togethers, Fireworks, and Your Pets. What the Experts Say.

July 3, 2025

Hello, and happy 4th of July from everybody at Amber’s Pawsitive Vibes Pet Services! It’s a great time of year to kick back, throw on Yankee Doodle Dandy, and embrace that American spirit.

Speaking of the American spirit, what’s more American than backyard barbecues with fireworks? Not much.

It’s easy for pets to get lost in the commotion of a backyard gathering. Usually, at least with my family, a fenced-in backyard allowed dogs from all members of the extended family to run wild during our Summer backyard extravaganzas.

While letting your pup roam free during the day is fine, once the fireworks come out, it is in the pet’s best interest to be brought indoors and away from the noise. Leaving your pet outside for celebrations can lead to unpredictable behavior, including running away!

The American Veterinary Medical Association has some great tips on how to prepare you and your pet for the big celebrations, which can be found here.

Fireworks aren’t the only hazard to your pets at cookouts, folks. Thankfully, the ASPCA has compiled a list of items commonly found in outdoor party settings that can be hazardous to your pet. See the list here.

As always, thank you from all of us at Amber’s Pawsitive Vibes Pet Services, and have a happy and safe holiday!
